Frequently asked questions
Is my JSON sent to a server?
No. Formatting and validation happen entirely in your browser, so it's safe to use with API responses, config files and private data.
What does the error message mean?
It tells you what's wrong and where, for example a trailing comma, a missing comma or single quotes instead of double quotes. Click “Go to error” to jump there.
What is minified JSON?
Minified JSON removes all spaces and line breaks. It's smaller, which is better for sending over the network.
What does “Sort keys” do?
It orders the keys in every object alphabetically, which makes it easier to compare two JSON files.
How big a file can I format?
Files up to 10 MB work well in most browsers.
