Frequently asked questions
What is a hash?
A hash is a short fingerprint of data. Even a one-letter change gives a completely different hash, so it's used to check files haven't been changed or corrupted.
How do I verify a downloaded file?
Choose the file, then paste the checksum from the download page into “Compare with”. A green match means the file is exactly what the publisher released.
Which algorithm should I use?
Use SHA-256 for most purposes. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for spotting accidental corruption but are no longer secure against deliberate tampering.
Can I hash passwords with this?
You can see a password's hash, but real systems should store passwords with slow algorithms like bcrypt or Argon2, not plain SHA or MD5.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Files are hashed inside your browser, up to 500 MB.
