Some browsers save the file as “gitignore” — rename it to “.gitignore” in your project root. Already committed a file? Add it here, then run git rm --cached <file> so Git stops tracking it.

How to use

  1. 1Search or pick the languages, frameworks, editors and OS you use.
  2. 2Add any extra lines of your own.
  3. 3Check the combined file; duplicates are removed.
  4. 4Download .gitignore or copy it into your project root.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put .gitignore?

In the root folder of your repository, next to the .git folder.

Why is a file still tracked after adding it?

.gitignore only affects untracked files. Run git rm --cached <file> and commit to stop tracking it.

What does ! mean in .gitignore?

It re-includes a file that an earlier rule ignored, like !.env.example.

Should I commit .env files?

No. Keep secrets out of Git; commit an .env.example with placeholder values instead.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you paste is sent to a server.
