Margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100 = ₹200.00 ÷ ₹1,000.00 × 100 = 20%

Markup = profit ÷ cost × 100 = ₹200.00 ÷ ₹800.00 × 100 = 25%

A 20% margin is the same as a 25% markup. For example, a 25% markup gives a 20% margin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. Buying at ₹800 and selling at ₹1,000 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.

How do I find the selling price for a 30% margin?

Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − 0.30). For a ₹700 cost that's ₹1,000.

Should I calculate margin before or after GST?

Before GST. GST is collected for the government, so work out margins on prices without tax, then add GST on top.

Why can't margin be 100% or more?

Because margin is a share of the selling price — even if the cost were zero, all of the price would be profit, which is 100%.

Is profit percentage the same as markup?

In everyday Indian usage, 'profit percentage' usually means profit on cost, which is the markup.
