A salary slip (payslip) shows how your monthly salary is made up and what is deducted. You need it for loans, visas, rent agreements and when changing jobs.

Parts of a salary slip

1. Company and employee details

Company name and address, your name, employee ID, designation, department, PAN, UAN (PF number), bank account and the number of paid days.

2. Earnings

  • Basic salary — the core of your pay, often 40–50% of the gross. PF and gratuity are calculated on it.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) — partly tax-free if you pay rent under the old tax regime. Check how much with the HRA Calculator.
  • Conveyance / transport allowance
  • Medical allowance
  • Special allowance — the balancing amount, fully taxable
  • Bonus, overtime or incentives when paid

3. Deductions

  • Provident Fund (PF) — 12% of Basic (plus DA). Many employers calculate it on a wage ceiling of ₹15,000, which is ₹1,800 a month. Your employer adds a matching contribution. See how it grows with the EPF Calculator.
  • Professional tax — a state tax; the amount depends on your state and salary (for example ₹200 a month in some states).
  • Income tax (TDS) — tax deducted each month based on your estimated yearly income. Estimate yours with the Income Tax Calculator.
  • Other — loan recovery, advances, ESI where applicable

4. Net pay

Net pay = Gross earnings − Total deductions. This is the amount credited to your bank account, often also written in words.

Gross, net and CTC

  • Gross salary = all earnings in the month
  • Net (take-home) salary = gross minus deductions
  • CTC = everything the company spends on you in a year, including the employer's PF share and benefits
