Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in metres)². For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m gives 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9.

What is a healthy BMI?

The WHO classes 18.5–24.9 as healthy, 25–29.9 as overweight and 30 or more as obese. Below 18.5 is underweight.

Is the healthy range different for Indians?

Yes. Indian and other Asian guidelines suggest health risks start at a lower BMI, treating 23–24.9 as overweight and 25 or more as obese. We show this too.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. BMI doesn't separate muscle from fat, so athletes may show a high BMI. It's also not meant for children, pregnant women or the elderly. Talk to a doctor for health advice.
