Frequently asked questions
How does it check an Aadhaar number?
The last digit of every Aadhaar is a Verhoeff check digit calculated from the other 11. A typo almost always breaks it.
Does valid mean the Aadhaar exists?
No. It only means the number is correctly formed. Use “Verify Aadhaar” on uidai.gov.in to check it's issued.
Is it safe to enter my Aadhaar here?
The check runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent or saved. Still, avoid sharing your full Aadhaar on unknown sites.
Why can't Aadhaar start with 0 or 1?
UIDAI doesn't issue numbers starting with 0 or 1, so those are always invalid.
